SUMMARY:Grandparent (& everyone) Care Bags
DESCRIPTION:Grandparent Bags!  Or Student Care Bags! \nWhat would you put in a care package for your college age child?   How would you gently lift up a stressed young adult?  What small thing would make a college student smile? \nStudent care bags are meant to bring a spot of love to an already stressed existence.  These bags consist of three things: \n\nA bag\nA note\nFun or yummy items\n\nThe bags should be small\, the notes should be short and the items should be few. \nBAGS: \nThese should be small.  Any kind of bag can be used…fabric\, paper or reusable plastic (not single-use).  These probably won’t be returned so consider them a gift.  However\, they could be reusable by the students.  Examples include paper lunch bags decorated by youth\, simple fabric bags that could be reused as a gift bag\, or a reusable\, sealable bag decorated with stickers and sharpie.  Let your fun side emerge when designing and decorating these bags. \nNOTES: \nThese notes should be short\, handwritten notes of encouragement and love like you would write to a (grand)child in college.  It is optional to sign the notes with your name and contact information.  The students served by Agape come from all faith backgrounds or no faith background.  Please be sensitive to this as you write your notes.  Remind the students that they are loved\, they are smart\, they are worthy\, they are resilient\, they are the future\, they are accepted\, they are courageous…the notes should be uplifting and inspiring.  You don’t know who will grab that bag so be sure that your note is caring and applicable to all people. \nITEMS: \nThe items in the bag can be edible treats or fun little items.  The edible items should be shelf-stable since we won’t know how long they will be waiting for a home.  Due to allergies and dietary restrictions\, please avoid nuts and gluten.  If the bags contain either of these\, please prepare a few without and label them as such.  The fun items should be small because most students don’t have much storage space and they should be inexpensive.  Examples include individual bags of chips\, cookies or crackers\, dollar store toys\, playing cards\, craft kits\, stress balls\, stickers\, office supplies later in the year\, fidgets\, etc.  Absolutely no cash\, gift cards or items of high value. \nThe bags will be placed out for students to grab during the weekly pizza event.  All students will be welcome to take a bag with them.  In fact\, they will be encouraged to take one to brighten their day.  If you wish to prepare themed bags\, please contact Agape for suggestions.

DESCRIPTION:GLC Voted YES!\n\n\nto becoming a Reconciling in Christ Congregation! \nThe vote was unanimous at the congregational meeting last Sunday. What does this mean? This means that we’ll be listed in the public records of Reconciling Works\, our ELCA partners that work for inclusion of our LGBTQIA+ neighbors\, racial equity and justice for those who have been marginalized. We will have access to their materials\, logo\, and other resources to help us in our goal of becoming more inviting to people in our community\, especially those who have been pushed out of churches in the past when their full identity or history has become known. \nIn tandem with our Reconciling in Christ Congregation designation\, our Council is working on updating our welcome statement. Furthermore\, during the month of June we’ll have a special celebratory worship service on June 26\, Pride Sunday\, to mark the beginning of this partnership in ministry.

DESCRIPTION:GLC takes dinner to Storefront\, the shelter for homeless teens\, on the first Monday of each month. Your help is needed… (don’t forget you can team up) to help this important outreach. This is one way we serve our youthful neighbors. A new sign up sheet is in the Narthex or call the office. Thank you all! \nEven if you can’t provide dinner on a Monday\, perishable and non-perishable breakfast lunch and snack items are also needed\, such as milk\, orange juice and cereal (teenagers can go through LOTS of cereal!)\, bread\, sandwich meat/cheese and individual bags of chips\, cookies\, ramen cups\, Hot Pockets\, frozen breakfast sandwiches\, you name it! Bring non-perishables to the office on Wednesday or Thursday\, or to worship any Sunday and put them in the Storefront basket\, or contact Pastor Karla for pick-up/coordination for delivery of perishable or frozen items. Also\, checks made out to San Diego Youth Services (Storefront written in the notes) can be mailed directly to San Diego Youth Services\, 3255 Wing Street\, San Diego\, CA 92110 or if given to Gethsemane\, note “Storefront” in the notes line.

We believe it is our duty and it is also our desire to protect the vulnerable among us and to adapt ourselves to the current times. We all live each day doing the best we can. We are a church that recognizes life is fragile and we are inherently vulnerable. We are always a breath away from our mortality. Please realize we make every effort to minimize the risk of transmitting COVID-19 during worship\, but even being careful cannot remove all risk. Also\, we want our non-vaccinated friends to be able to worship with us without being singled out. The 8am service is a much smaller group and there are few responses and no singing\, so mask-wearing there has been optional. We are asking all who attend the 8 a.m. service to have a face covering with you\, just in case we have a friend in attendance who is not yet comfortable being out without covering. Thank you.

We believe it is our duty and it is also our desire to protect the vulnerable among us and to adapt ourselves to the current times. We all live each day doing the best we can. We are a church that recognizes life is fragile and we are inherently vulnerable. We are always a breath away from our mortality. Please realize we make every effort to minimize the risk of transmitting COVID-19 during worship\, but even being careful cannot remove all risk. Also\, we want our non-vaccinated friends to be able to worship with us without being singled out. The 8am service is a much smaller group and there are few responses and no singing\, so mask wearing there has been optional. We are asking all who attend the 8am service to have a face covering with you\, just in case we have a friend in attendance who is not yet comfortable being out without covering. Thank you.
